Netflix seizes the animated Cowboy Bebop to make a series

Netflix puts the turbo on Japanese animation. The day after the announcement of the upcoming arrival of several animated series on its platform (Neon Genesis Evangelion, a remake of the Knights of the Zodiac and another Ultraman), the video streaming giant reveals, on his Twitter account, that he will produce his own version of a science fiction masterpiece: Cowboy Bebop. According to the specialized website Variety, the Reed Hastings company will transpose, in collaboration with the studio Tomorrow (Aquarius), the cult cartoon of 1998 in series "live action" (with real actors). The first season will span ten episodes. Shinichiro Watanabe, creator of the original work, will participate in the project as a consultant, while Chris Yost, screenwriter Thor: Ragnorok, will handle the script of the first episode. No showrunner has yet been designated to oversee the entire series, and the date of going online is not yet known.

Cowboy Bebop tells the story of a bounty hunter who travels through the solar system in a dystopian future. In only 26 episodes, the animated series has established itself as a flagship piece of pop culture, thanks to its adult tone, its jazzy soundtrack, and a successful mix of space opera, western and martial arts movies. Since its release in 1998, the renown of Cowboy Bebop has continued to expand, from his native Japan to the United States, where great directors like Steven Spielberg, Denis Villeneuve and Rian Johnson cite him as an animated worship. After the franchise has been exploited with a film (in 2003), two video games and several mangas, it is not surprising that Netflix decides to offer its own version of the work of Shinichiro Watanabe, even if the choice of a series in live shooting could potentially put off the fans of the first hour.
